Do you remember the day you left Albania the first time?

The very first time I left Albania was actually when I sang in Denmark with a delegation of Albanian youth at Festival Roskilde — still the largest music festival in Northern Europe. I remember singing like 40–50 folk songs that night for an international audience of thousands of people outdoors. It was in the "white nights" of Scandinavia. I had an amazing experience but actually I couldn't wait to come back home. Even to this day I am very connected to my country.

After that I sang in many countries always representing the folk of Albania — Algiers, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Greece with different ensembles and orchestras and I always came back home.

In 1992 I went to America. It was not just something that popped in my mind — let me go there so I can realize my dreams — because to me life itself is a dream. But it was the ambition to promote Albanian music on the stage of the world. And this is a motif that accompanies me step after step to praise the Albanian folk song. Albanian folk is the oldest and most original music that exists.

I remember when you came back from America in 1996 you surprised the public. Many things had changed. And then you went back and were silent for a while. Why?

Oh… I can't live without singing. I have been very busy indeed always, always singing. Every day I sing, in concerts, in different studios, at home or in a small café, everywhere I always find a way to work with musicians in and out of Albania.

I came back home with a tour that I baptized with the name "Këngët e Popullit Tim" — The Songs of My People. The first concert I gave in my birthplace Kavajë… and also in the cities of Tiranë, Vlorë, Elbasan, Fier, where I lived special emotions in the stadiums full of people where I sang until midnight under the stars.

Another tour with the title "Mos Ja Prishni Lumturinë" was realized in Switzerland, Kosovë and Greece. After these concerts I sang in America with my English project with my band in some Hollywood clubs — Martini Lounge, The Gig — Galapagos and Piazza Bella in New York, Anthony's Pier 4 in Boston, but always in the center of my activities has been the Albanian folk.

How did you start your collaboration in the United States?

One of my first songs which I co-wrote with the producer Steve Snow was "Noi Siamo Uno" and then I collaborated with writer/producer LeMel Humes who worked with Ray Charles, Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder and I worked with other musicians. But I felt like it was only a drop of water in this big ocean. I felt like I was doing something that did not represent the depth of my soul. I embraced the Albanian folk, because that's where I find the inspiration I was missing to do something unique artistically. For me the folk song is in my blood.

I started writing my first songs singing with my husband while he played guitar and those were the first recordings of the new album. Robert being from the South in the U.S, having deep roots in blues music and the culture of New Orleans, he found it natural and mysterious to connect with the music of my land and was fascinated by the Albanian folk music and he always thought of it as undiscovered like a forbidden apple.

Your unique connection with Robert, not just as a husband but also as a musician — how much has he influenced you?

Not just as a singer but as a songwriter as well. Until the wee hours of the morning, Robert and I would be in our home studio, writing, recording or rehearsing some kind of music or songs.

You always have been connected with folk music. Why?

As a child I sang every Sunday with my grandpa, my father and my mother. From my dad Kito Simaku, I learned how to sing. He taught me how to sing "Iso" by singing 'Ehhhh' and 'Ohhhh'. This music is the only treasure that no one could reproduce or copy it, you can't buy it or sell it and this is the Albanian folk.

Can you say one story of when you have lived very strong emotions?

When I became a mother, that moment was sublime. He was born a year ago and now he is the inspiration in my music. He just started walking and he's brought so much luck and many new things in our lives. For his birthday we bought him a little wooden piano and he loves to bang on it and yell 'ahh…ohh' and Robert says look my son's doing Rock and Roll.

What represents a day for Parashqevi Simaku?

I love New York. I love Central Park. I spend a lot of time outside with Luke. I love to cook. I love to paint and read as many books as I can. Robert smiles and says 'I'm lucky because all the women in the world like diamonds but you ask me for books'. But also I am lucky to have those too. We spend a lot of time in the studio, recording, writing, singing in the company of guitar. Music is always around us.

In your musical career in America, have you achieved your dream?

I would answer by saying that the peak of all my work is the new songs and this new music that I have written and recorded with Robert. We are about to finish the mixes of my new album in Albanian language where Albanian folk is the base of this project which I can't wait to share it with my public. On a special note I would like to dedicate this album to Albanians wherever they are around the world.

What do you think of the changes in Albanian music in recent years?

Every generation has its own music with which it identifies. I think that art and business don't really mix well. They are counter to each other. Many of the top selling artists of the world don't even sing live. The songs of today are like fashion. But true music is like the seasons and the folk songs are like the leaves that fall and are reborn again in the spring. True art has always found a way, just like the light at the end of the tunnel. The folk music has always resisted time.

Parashqevi Simaku, këngëtarja e dashur e shqiptarëve iku nga Shqipëria në vitin 1992. Asnjë lajm prej saj, derisa u rikthye. Për të marrë pjesë në Festivalin e Këngës dhe dhënë një koncert në Shqipëri. Ishte viti 1997. Koha e gabuar për ta bërë këtë. Në Shqipëri luftohej. Ndaj edhe pse në Shqipëri kishte luftë, të gjitha pyetjet janë për dashurinë. Intervista nuk u botua për shkak se gazeta "Koha Jonë" u dogj më 2 mars 1997. Ajo u botua e plotë, vetëm pas rihapjes, më 4 maj 1997.

Na thoni një datë që e veçoni nga të tjerat?

Dita e të dashuruarve. Në 14 shkurt '96, Robert, im shoq më propozoi martesë. Atë mbrëmje shkurti, ai më ftoi në restorantin Xhons të Beverly Hills, ku më dhuroi unazën e familjes së tij. Më pas mësova se po në atë restorant ishte martuar dhe Merlin Monro.

Si u njohët?

Në jetën time familja zë një vend të rëndësishëm. Njohja jonë erdhi për shkak të punës së përbashkët. Ai ishte instrumentist, i binte kitarës dhe këndonte në grupin, ku e shoqëruar nga 6 muzikantë, unë këndoja. Ndërsa po i jepnim dorën e fundit punës për të përfunduar albumin tim, më pyeti një ditë nëse mund të dilnim bashkë.

Përgjigja juaj ishte menjëherë po?

Një shqiptare nuk thotë menjëherë po, qoftë dhe në Amerikë. Unë kujtoj t'i kem thënë: "Puno me mua, ose dashurohu me mua", ndërsa ai m'u përgjigj se nuk do t'i pëlqente t'i ndante. Ai është shumë simpatik dhe unë duke i lënë refuzimet mënjanë, i shpjegova, që më parë duhet të respektonte traditën e vendit tim, pra t'i kërkonte dorën e vajzës, prindërve të mi, me anë të një letre.

Kjo në fillim s'i pëlqeu shumë, por duke shkruar një letër të gjatë, të gjatë, nisi t'i dukej gati zbavitës fakti që iu shkruante dy njerëzve të panjohur, kundrejt të cilëve ndjente detyrim shpirtëror. Prindërit e mi i kthyen përgjigje pas dy javësh dhe pasi u prezantova në familjen e tij, për të dy nisi një jetë tjetër, një jetë e përbashkët që na duket sikur do të vazhdojë përjetësisht.

Ç'e bënte të pamundur lidhjen tuaj? (para Robertit)

Mospasja e idealeve të përbashkëta. Ideali im ishte muzika. Po i atij? Politika. Unë i jam dedikuar e gjitha idealit tim dhe them se nuk do e braktis kurrë.

Pra në vitin '92 kur u larguat nga Shqipëria…

Nga Shqipëria ika zemërthyer prej lidhjes me një njeri i cili dukej se ecte në një rrugë krejt të kundërt nga e imja. Kur kuptova se sado të përpiqesha, rrugët tona s'do e kishin kurrë një pikë të përbashkët, sakrifikova dhimbjen time, për t'u larguar drejt së panjohurës, por jo me ide krejt të paqarta, pse ajo që gjithmonë më ka udhëhequr, ka qenë ambicia për të ecur në rrugën e artit.

Si tentuat mandej Hollivudin?

Po, në Amerikë më ftoi një familje dibrane e cila më lidhi një kontratë pune nën restorantin e saj në Nju Jork. Vetëm se nuk këndova ato këngët e trishtuara popullore që linin shije të keqe, por shfrytëzova fillimisht repertorin tim të muzikës popullore dhe asaj të lehtë. U njoha me Antoni Athanas, i cili është heroi i ëndrrës sime. Ai kishte arritur majat e suksesit dhe përderisa Amerika atij ia kishte dhënë këtë mundësi, pse të mos ma jepte mua. Ndaj i kërkova një mendim të sinqertë dhe ai së pari më këshilloi hapin e parë, të mësoja gjuhën. Mandej më prezantoi me Stan Dragotin.

Për një vit jetova e vetme në Nju Jork, ku fillova një kurs intensiv gjuhe, të shoqëruar nga njohja e muzikës amerikane.

Si e siguronit financimin e kurseve?

Duke punuar padyshim shumë dhe duke dëshiruar shumë të arrij. Në Amerikë mjafton të duash dhe të dish të kërkosh atë që do, është i vetmi vend, ndoshta, ku cilido qofsh, s'ka ëndërr që s'të bëhet realitet.

Ka aq shumë amerikanë që këndojnë. Pse një shqiptare duhet të fitojë lojën në tokën e tyre?

Sepse ata janë të gjithë njësoj. Unë jam ndryshe, muzika ime, të kënduarit tim, folklori i vendit tim, shpirti im, ambicia ime është ndryshe, është shqiptare. Një origjinalitet ngaherë e kudo mirëpritet.

Sa kohë keni në Amerikë?

Kam 4 vjet që jetoj atje. Pas kaq kohësh munda të arrij në pragun e ëndrrës amerikane për të qenë dikush. Tani për mua dera është e hapur. Puna është në do futem me këmbën e majtë, apo atë të djathtë.

Albumin si e përshkruani?

Ne porsa kemi përfunduar një album "Fluturoj brenda tempullit tim" ku këngët janë shkruar dhe kompozuar 80% nga unë dhe 20% nga ai.

Besoni tek ato që thoni apo ju pëlqen ekzibicioni?

Në festival nuk bëra ekzibicion, por thjesht u kënaqa kur im shoq m'u afrua e më puthi ndërsa këndoja për herë të parë bashkë më të, në një skenë ku ngaherë kisha qenë e vetme. Besoj se nuk është i mençur ai që tregon përralla, por ai që bën përrallën e vetë realitet.
